The coriander we use in our daily dishes is also used as a medicine in Ayurvedic and tribal medicine. It is known to be used especially to prevent epilepsy. However, it is not yet known how it can prevent the disease.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have shown that dodecanol, a key ingredient in coriander, binds to potassium and regulates brain and heart function by making it easier to absorb into the bloodstream. The result is a reduced chance of having a seizure. For that reason, it is said to have been used since time immemorial in tribal medicine.
